Identity Theft

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States.  Chances are you or someone you know have been a victim of identity theft at some level.  Identity thieves often obtain your personal identifiers (social security number, driver’s license number, date of birth, etc., and use that information to secure credit in your name through credit cards, goods or services.  Identity theft can take from several months to many years to correct the damage as it is often difficult to determine the true extent of the theft.

You should periodically obtain a copy of your credit report from each credit reporting agency to see if there are any unknown credit lines or inquiries in your name.  The contact information for the three major credit reporting agencies are as follows. Equifax (888) 532-0179; Experian (800) 311-4769; and Trans Union (800) 680-7289.
